Alas Kedaton is a small forest with the width about 6-7ha located in in Kukuh village, Marga district, and Tabanan regency, which has the status as Penyungsungan Jagat (Main Temple in function) for Hindu Balinese. The total size of this forest, temple and its supporter facility is about 12 ha. In this forest, there is a temple called Alas Kedaton Temple and owns the natural environments that is looked green with its fresh air and create the calm, quite and holy atmosphere.

Alas Kedaton Temple builts by Hindu holy priest named Mpu Kuturan, when the region ruled by King of Sri Masula – Masuli according to Sading inscription in the year of 1100Saka -1177Saka /1178AD-1255AD.The temple position facing westward,and there are 4 entrance or exit doors that very unusual as other temple in Bali.On the temple yards rather unique, that inner yard of the temple is lower than middle yard.

The monkeys living in Alas Kedaton are included in Macaca Fascicularis clan that most monkeys living in other forest in Bali too. We can also find the big baths (Pteropus vampyrus) are living in this forest and 24 types of trees identified include Dau, Mahogany, Adeng, Salam and Klampuak. The leaf of Dau, Salam and Klampuak trees are the food of monkeys.

Few artifacts found in this temple such as:

  • Statue of Lingga and Sculpture symbol of Siwa.In Hindu concepts Siwa is one from the Tri Murti Manifestation of the Almighty God such as; Brahma (Creator), Wisnu (Preserver/Protector), and Siwa (Destroyer).
  • Statue of Durga Mahesasura Mardani with 8 hands. Also in Hindu Beliefs Durga is Sakti (Energi) from Siwa (Power)
  • Statue of Ganesha that sits on the Lotus with 2 dragons(snakes).Ganesha is Son of Siwa. Become symbol as the God of wisdom, the glory of knowledge, and in fact Ganesha has seven names on his powers.

The temple ceremony in alas Kedaton temple is carried out every 210 days a year. It is on Anggarakasih Medangsia (Balinese Hindu Calendar) or on every Tuesday where on that time the society do the worship or pray to request the safety and prosperity. The unique in this ceremony is do not use the fire and do not hence Penjor and also finished before the sunset or before the night is come.

In front of Alas Kedaton temple there are quite a lot small shops selling the handicraft as souvenir, for example clothes, pants and other handicrafts. Others, there are some shops booth selling food and beverage, toilet and park area which is wide enough.

The Facilities of the Alas Kedaton Forest Monkey are complete. The Venue has adequate parking space, toilets, a security post, tour guide services, souvenir shops and snack vendors, everything that tourist need. It is open everyday.
