The United States military says it has carried out strikes on nearly 2,000 targets across Iran, describing the operation as one of the largest military campaigns in the region in decades. According to officials from US Central Command, the scale of the attacks has been almost twice as large as the “shock and awe” air campaign launched during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, highlighting the intensity of the current confrontation.
Military leaders say the strikes have targeted a wide array of Iranian military assets, including missile launch facilities, air defense systems, command-and-control centers, and naval installations. The operation follows what officials described as the largest American military buildup in the Middle East in a generation, involving aircraft carriers, long-range bombers, advanced fighter jets, and a significant deployment of naval forces.
The commander of US Central Command also reported that 17 Iranian naval vessels have been destroyed since the start of the operation. These ships were believed to be operating in strategic waterways and were considered a threat to US forces and commercial shipping routes in the region.
First American Casualties Confirmed
The Pentagon confirmed the identities of four American soldiers who were among the first US casualties in the conflict with Iran. The deaths underscore the growing risks faced by US personnel deployed throughout the Middle East as military operations intensify.
In a separate announcement, the Pentagon later identified two additional US service members who were killed in a drone attack on a military installation in Kuwait on Sunday. Officials said the strike targeted a base used by American troops, though further details about the attack remain under investigation.
Israel Expands Strikes in Iran and Lebanon
The fighting is rapidly spreading across multiple countries. Israeli officials say their forces have launched new waves of airstrikes across Tehran, targeting sites believed to be linked to Iran’s military infrastructure.
At the same time, Israel confirmed it has conducted attacks in Beirut, focusing on what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure. Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group backed by Iran, has long been considered one of Israel’s most powerful regional adversaries.
Reports from Lebanon indicate that several people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, although the exact number of casualties remains unclear. Israeli authorities maintain that their operations are aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s military capabilities and preventing further attacks.
Iran Launches Attacks Across the Region
Iran has also continued launching strikes in response to the US-Israeli campaign. Authorities in Saudi Arabia said their air defense systems successfully intercepted two cruise missiles, which they believe were part of Iran’s retaliatory operations.
In another development that underscores the widening scope of the conflict, a state-affiliated Iranian news agency reported that Iran launched a drone attack against an Amazon data center in Bahrain. Bahrain hosts important US military facilities and has become a key digital infrastructure hub in the Gulf, making it a strategically sensitive target.
Political Clash in Washington Over War Powers
The escalating conflict has also triggered a political debate in Washington over the limits of presidential authority in military action. Republican lawmakers rejected a resolution that would have required President Donald Trump to seek congressional approval before launching additional strikes against Tehran.
Supporters of the measure argued that Congress should play a central role in authorizing prolonged military engagement. However, opponents said the president must retain flexibility to respond quickly to emerging threats.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff signaled that the campaign could intensify further. He said US forces would begin “striking progressively deeper” into Iranian territory, suggesting that future operations may target more strategic sites further inland.
Rising Civilian Death Toll in Iran
The humanitarian toll inside Iran is mounting rapidly. According to a US-based human rights monitoring organization, more than 1,000 people have been killed since US and Israeli strikes began over the weekend. The reported casualties include both military personnel and civilians, although independent verification remains difficult due to limited access to affected areas.
Human rights groups warn that the death toll could climb significantly if the pace of strikes continues, particularly as large urban areas such as parts of Tehran experience sustained bombardment.
Evacuations and Market Reactions
As security conditions deteriorate, governments are taking steps to assist their citizens in the region. The United Kingdom announced it will charter a repatriation flight from Oman to evacuate British nationals who have become stranded due to the rapidly escalating crisis.
The geopolitical turmoil is also shaking global financial markets. Stock markets across Asia opened sharply lower, reflecting investor fears that the conflict could disrupt global trade and energy supplies. South Korea’s stock market saw particularly steep losses, with some indexes falling by more than 8% in early trading.

With US forces striking thousands of targets, Israel expanding its operations, and Iran responding with attacks across the region, analysts warn that the confrontation is entering a highly volatile and potentially prolonged phase.
